Election

This piece was written in response to a journal prompt in my creative writing class: “write about how the forum between the two Manual principal candidates will unfold”. This was written in about five minutes.

Election

by Cassidy Witt

The auditorium is pitch black. Two spotlights illuminate the stage. This is the only source of light. The audience can not see each other. The audience can not see itself. The audience can only see the two men on stage, under the spotlight.

One man is wearing all black.

Black blazer, black tie, black slacks, black socks, black shoes.

One man is wearing all white.

White blazer, white tie, white slacks, white socks, white shoes.

The man in black is wearing a white sign with black letters that reads “Candidate 1”.

The man in white is wearing a black sign with white letters that reads “Candidate 2”.

The audience screams. It is jarring.

The audience stops screaming. They are in unison.

Candidate 1 opens their mouth, Candidate 2 coughs, Candidate 1 waits, Candidate 2 continues coughing, Candidate 1 waits, Candidate 2 stops coughing.

Candidate 1 rests the microphone on his bottom lip. It is too close. You can hear him breathing heavily.

He whispers, “Manual is the school of Students and Education. Here at Manual, we educate students.” His voice lacks expression.

The audience screams. They match pitch. It is jarring.

The audience stops screaming. They are in unison.

Candidate 2 opens their mouth, Candidate 1 begins turning in circles, Candidate 2 waits, Candidate 1 continues turning, Candidate 2 waits, Candidate 1 stops turning.

Candidate 2 stands 6.4 feet away from the microphone. It is too far. You can not hear anything.

He yells, “Manual is the school of Students and Art. Here at Manual, we art students.” His voice is high pitched. He sounds like a little girl.

The audience screams. They harmonize. It is jarring.

The audience stops screaming. They are in unison. The two spotlights merge to become one. Candidate 1 and Candidate 2 turn to face each other.

Candidate 1 slaps Candidate 2.

Candidate 2 pulls Candidate 1 into an intimate embrace.

The audience exits. They are in step.

They never stop screaming. It is jarring.
